I think you're right about McManaman - is he still under contract at Real?
I was looking forward to next season until I found out how little Keegan has to spend! And with Foe and Schmeichel gone it could be up to some of the kids to come through like Barton and Sukor. I just think Liverpool need a bit of width - apart from that I think they'll have a much better season next year.

Actually I heard a rumour today that Keegan's after McManaman - but you can keep Heskey!
Have you noticed that any player who wants to leave a club is immediately linked to United or Arsenal - I think United's plan to continue dominating the domestic trophies is to buy every single player in the league.

Only one - City need eleven!
If I had to pick one it would be Edgar Davids - I can just see his skills being complemented by the silky touches of Tiatto and Horlock!!!

Further to the alleged size of the Judahite and Israelite armies in 2 Chronicles 13 here are a few statistics about the Roman imperial army at the height of the Empire in the 2nd Century A.D.
At this time the Roman Empire had 3 legions in Britain, 1 in Spain, 4 along the Rhine, 11 along the Danube, 9 in the Near East and 2 in Africa. Each legion had an average of 5000 troops, each made up of 10 cohorts of 500 men approx. The imperial army numbered about 300,000 men, half of whom made up the legions.
This means, according to the bible, that Abijah's Judahite army was bigger than the legions of Rome combined and Jeroboam's Israelite army was actually 3 times the size.
Maybe the 'inspired' bible writers were prone to exagerate.

I need 10 quick anti 1914 arguments to print out.
by ColdRedRain inas i mentioned in another forum, i'm going to an aunt's wedding and i know my family's going to try to debate with me.
i thought a good way to win some debates was to debunk the 1914 teaching.
i have very little time these days because i work frequently and i can't get to the library to use the internet.

Nicolau,
I think what Alan is saying is that 2 Chronicles 36:20 and Jeremiah 25:11-12 pinpoint the end of the 70 years as 539 BC when the Persian army entered Babylon without a battle. It was a very sudden change in power with Belshazzar killed with the capture of the city and Nabonidus surrendering soon after.
This would give 609 BC as the start of the seventy years.
The major events around this time were the destruction of Ninevah by the Babylonians and Medes in 612 BC, the defeat of Harran (Assyria's last stronghold) in 609 BC, and the Babylonian defeat of Egypt at the Battle of Carchemish in 605 BC. Take your pick!
It was only victory at the Battle of Carchemish that enabled Nebuchadrezzar "to impose his hold swiftly over the former Assyrian provinces and vassal territories in the west" - The Cambridge Ancient History D.J.Wiseman.
The website http://www.hostkingdom.net/regindex.html gives lists of all the kingdoms in the area around this period. It shows the dates for transfer of power from Assyria to Babylon for each kingdom with 609 BC being the most common. This would tie in with Jeremiah 25 which says "and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years".
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info IG.
I've just read the battle account in 2 Chronicles 13 to get a picture of this battle. Here we have Abijah leading 400,000 hand picked Judahites against Jeroboam's 800,000 hand picked Israelites. By the end of the battle the Israelites have lost 500,000 troops.
I've been trying to think of another battle that comes close to this sheer scale of troops and casualty numbers.
The retreat of Napoleon from Russia cost the lives of nearly 600,000 soldiers of the Grande Armee.
I can think of one more, The Battle of the Somme. Fought from July to November 1916 between the 3 greatest powers of the time, Germany, Britain and France, the combined casualties were about 1 million men. The British alone lost 19,240 troops on the first day of battle.
If these two historical events don't cast doubt on the exagerated numbers in 2 Chronicles 13 then maybe the following will:
It (Canaan) gradually developed into a mature system with large cities, medium sized regional market centers, and small villages. By the highpoint of this settlement wave in the eighth century BCE, after the establishment of the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, it encompassed over 500 sites, with a population of about 160,000. - Archaeology's New Vision of Ancient Israel, Finkelstein and Silberman.
The two states were simply not big enough to support armies of this size. With armies this size they could have conquered the whole ancient world.

How absolutely thrilled I am to see United win yet another title. I do hope they can win every trophy next year once they've spent another £50 million on players this summer. yawn.

Dino cancer
by peacefulpete ini have been reading about dinosaurs and other contemporaneous animals and have repeatedly encountered examples of physical malformation (diseased or deformed bone and teeth)and evidence of bone cancer over 100 million years ago.
does this not refute the position held by jws that disease resulted from adam's sin?
comments?

God did make animals first then Adam.
Demar, are you sure??
Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him."
So out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. (Gen 2:18,19 RSV)
